A large percentage of Canadians believe that immigration is good for their country. This belief is due to the positive effect immigration has on the country. Thus, most Canadians are in support of the government’s immigration plan.
Become A Canadian reported that the plan is to attract over 1.3 million newcomers to Canada between 2022 to 2024.
Generally, there is a disparity in the rate at which the different political parties in the country support immigration to Canada. About 69% of Canadians who voted for the Liberal Party in the 2021 federal election support immigration. On the other hand, about 60% of supporters of the New Democratic Party (NDP) think immigration is good for their country. From the report, 46% of the people who voted for Conservative Party candidates believe Canadian immigration is good.
Despite the variations, the fact that most Canadians support immigration holds true, said Become A Canadian.
The View of the New Democratic Party's Immigration Critic
Jenny Kwan, a Member of Parliament from East Vancouver, made a call on the Liberal government. Jenny Kwan, who is also the New Democratic Party’s Immigration Critic, stated that the government should provide landed status to temporary foreign workers on arrival in the country.
She stated that there are over 500,000 temporary foreign residents who are already living in Canada. Based on this high number, the government needs to create special immigration levels that regularize those workers. With this regularization, the workers will make a major contribution to meeting Canada’s labour skill shortage, said Become A Canadian.
Immigrants Make Canada Better
A recent poll in Canada showed that most Canadians think immigration has various positive effects on the country. From the report, almost 75% of Canadians think newcomers’ talent and hard work make the country better.
