According to its co-founder, a new national magazine that tells the stories of immigrants in Canada and “third culture” individuals seeks to change how newcomers are perceived. The magazine, 3, pays tribute to third-culture individuals, defined as those influenced by their parents’ culture and the culture of the country where they grew up.

Muraly Srinarayanathas, co-founder and co-publisher of the magazine, is an example of this type of person. Of Tamil descent from Sri Lanka, he was born in the United Kingdom and moved to Canada when he was seven years old. According to him, Canada is “the creator and nurturer of third culture kids.” His vision is for the magazine to reflect the diverse backgrounds of immigrants in the country and to break stereotypes, especially at a time when the number of newcomers is significantly increasing in Canada.

According to Statistics Canada, the country’s population grew by 3.2% in 2023, the most significant increase since 1957. Approximately 97.6% of that growth is due to immigration, with 471,771 new immigrants settling in the country last year. Srinarayanathas believes that the value newcomers can bring is often underestimated.
The first edition of 3 includes a profile of Abdullah Snobar, CEO of DMZ and CEO of DMZ Ventures, startup incubators affiliated with Toronto Metropolitan University. Srinarayanathas emphasizes that Snobar, although he could have established his company elsewhere, chose Toronto as his base, reflecting his responsibility as a Canadian citizen.
According to Srinarayanathas and Stacy Lee Kong, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, creating a publication focused on the stories and challenges of immigrants and third-culture individuals was a long-unmet need. The first edition of the magazine was published on September 3, 2024.
